Google Bowling
Nov 3, 2005 Google, Search Engine Optimization
I was just poking around in the Google Groups and ran across a thread about Google Bowling.
At first I thought Google started making web flash games or something, but of course, that would be silly. Turns out Google Bowling is technique malicious search engine optimizers and others are using to sabotage competitors site rankings. Google’s rankings for a site are based on many things, but one thing that can greatly increase your rankings is to have another site that links to your site.
The idea behind this is, if you have a page that someone feels worthy enough to create a link on their page to yours, you must have something pretty decent that others might want to see. So if you get dozens or even hundreds of links, then you defiantly have something people want to see. Therefore your site would get a bump up on the rankings.
Now, let’s say I have a site with a 1,000 pages and I strike a deal with someone to display a link for them on every page of my site. They now have an instant 1,000 incoming links. Well, its seems Google penalizes sites for site-wide links being displayed on another site. This makes me thing about my own site with the links to the other blogs I display. They show on almost every page. Sounds like something I need to change, maybe something all of us should change.
From the job of a search engine, this makes sence. All in all I think that Google Page Rank is a good idea, but there are many factors that need to be dealt with to make it a fair game on the web.

Hmmm, interesting. It does sound a bit unfair, since I can’t control who links to my site really unless I file a lawsuit or something, and even then I’d have to be aware of who’s linking to me. I look forward to Buster, the Master of All that is SEO :), to comment on this one.
