The 3 Essential Components of a Search Engine Optimization Campaign
Apr 15, 2005 Search Engine Optimization
This article breaks down the ‘essential components’ of a sucessfull search engine optimization campaign.
Basically the 3 points are:
- Content
This of course is a given. If you have nothing to read/look-at, you will not be ranked. Sites get on search engines by text found on a web page. Therefore, if text is not found on your page, it will not be indexed and therefore can not be ranked.
- Good Internal Linking
Your site will needs some links so that viewers can get-to and go-from page to page. These links are the same links search engines will follow to find pages to index. So it would be good to fully maximize your links by using keywords for the link text and title. You should always use the title attribute with your links, even if they are pointed to a page within your site.
- In-Bound/External Links
Unfortunantly ***, you can not achive high rankings on your own. The 3rd point mentioned in this article is getting in-bound / external links, from other sites, to your site. It is well known that Google uses the PageRank idea to help sort the sites out. The idea here is, if a site links to your page, you must have something worth seeing. So, if 100 people think you have something worth seeing, it must be good.
***Note: When I say unfortunantly, I do not mean to put down the Google PageRank system. I do feel it is a good idea in the respects of knowing what good sites and pages are and one of the better systems we have. However, I do not like the idea that one could have the greatest site around, yet if it is not linked to, then it will not be ranked well. This just sounds too ‘highschoolish’ to me.

Bu$ter turned me on to the cool idea of SE friendly URLs. After doing a little looking around I ran into this Apache Module that would do just that.
I have a few sites w/ friendly URLs but I’ve always scripted it out using the that idea. This takes a little time and always run into obstacles on the way. So this might be a good alternative, plus it can be used w/ pre-existing scripts.
