New Sportswriter
Nov 3, 2005 Friends & Family 2 Comments
I got word today that a good friend from high school has a new position as a sportswriter for the Times-Standard newspaper in Humboldt County, CA (northern california). How cool is that? Great success and so much fun at the same time! He just had his first article published as a sportswriter for the paper, but also is a journalist for Osprey, a Humboldt State University student magazine.
Congratulations to Erik, I look forward to reading more!
Google Bowling
Nov 3, 2005 Google, Search Engine Optimization 1 Comment
I was just poking around in the Google Groups and ran across a thread about Google Bowling.
At first I thought Google started making web flash games or something, but of course, that would be silly. Turns out Google Bowling is technique malicious search engine optimizers and others are using to sabotage competitors site rankings. Google’s rankings for a site are based on many things, but one thing that can greatly increase your rankings is to have another site that links to your site.
The idea behind this is, if you have a page that someone feels worthy enough to create a link on their page to yours, you must have something pretty decent that others might want to see. So if you get dozens or even hundreds of links, then you defiantly have something people want to see. Therefore your site would get a bump up on the rankings.
Now, let’s say I have a site with a 1,000 pages and I strike a deal with someone to display a link for them on every page of my site. They now have an instant 1,000 incoming links. Well, its seems Google penalizes sites for site-wide links being displayed on another site. This makes me thing about my own site with the links to the other blogs I display. They show on almost every page. Sounds like something I need to change, maybe something all of us should change.
From the job of a search engine, this makes sence. All in all I think that Google Page Rank is a good idea, but there are many factors that need to be dealt with to make it a fair game on the web.

Here is a great CSS slide show that shows off some very useful extensions and features for Firefox. I use about half of them, so I was glad to learn of some new ones, like MeasureIT and Screen Grab
The slide show is perfectly named Rapid Web Development and Testing with Mozilla Firefox. The ones I use really help save time!
Web Development Cheat Sheets, Must Haves
Jun 25, 2005 CSS, Graphic Design, MySQL, PHP, Web Development 2 Comments
Today I found a site that offers great web development cheat sheets!
There is MySQL, mod_rewrite, CSS, PHP and RGB Hex color chart. All great to have, I hope to print them out on the nice color laserjet at work!
I know the MySQL one will be helpful for reminding me the MySQL data types, the PHP one will be great help for formatting dates.
The CSS one has a great diagram for understanding margins and padding of box elements.
The RGB Hex color chart is a great companion to Website Colors.
With the Colors Cheat Sheet you can get a color close to what you want and plug that into the website color tool and tweak it to just what you want. Then compare with other colors to get your full color scheme. Great Stuff!
